PAST NEWS AND EVENTS

Union Candidate - SASHA for USyd Union! - 14th May 2008

At the Annual General Meeting the club moved to endorse Sasha Uher as our candidate in the upcoming Union Board elections on Wednesday May 14 2008.

We have a real chance to take a position on Union Board this year, but we can only achieve our goals if all members put in their best efforts.

I urge all club members to come out and help campaign for the next few weeks. If you would like to help or require further information, please feel free to contact either myself or Sasha. Alternatively, you can join the Facebook group Sasha for USyd Union!

Remember, Vote Sasha to Energise your Union!

Make Education Fair Protest - Friday 18th April 2008

Bias against Liberals in education is a problem many of us face every single day. We want to send unions and the Labor Government the message that students from all backgrounds have the right to an education free from political interference. So:
  • What: A peaceful protest outside the offices of the Education Union in the city.
  • When: Friday, 18th April 2008, at 11AM
  • Where: Education Union Building, Sydney city.
  • Why: The Young Liberals and the ALSF are running a campaign to expose the bias at unis and schools and are compiling numerous examples of bias perpetrated against Liberal Students. Recently, a Liberal student was quoted in the West Australian quoting the example of a student who was told not to write an essay in favour of WorkChoices, or she would get marked down. There are many, many more examples of this occurring on campuses around the country, and we want to ensure our members continue to have the right to exercise freedom of thought and expression.
  • How: Email president@youngliberal.org if you would like to participate, or for more information.

NSW Liberal Students' Association Pub Crawl - 19th April 2008

For one night a year, Sydney is transformed. For one night a year, Sydney celebrates like nowhere else. For one night a year, Sydney is the party capital of the world.

That night is Saturday 19th April, when The Rocks will be filled with freedom fighters from the NSWLSA celebrating the triumph of Liberalism! The night starts at 7:00pm at the Captain Cook Hotel (33 Kent St map). A detailed itinerary is available on Facebook.

This is an event not to miss and all Liberal students are encouraged to be there! There will also be a scavenger-hunt on the night with great prizes to be won.

Notice of Annual General Meeting - 17th April 2008

The 2008 Annual General Meeting of the Sydney University Liberal Club shall be held at 6:00pm on Thursday the 17th April in the Isobel Fidler room in the Manning Building. The AGM will be followed by drinks and should be a fun night for all! I strongly urge all members to attend.

Freedom Fighters Upstage NUS Rally

Over 50 freedom fighters rallied in support of freedom of association and VSU today upstaging the pityful protest organised by the radical-left Australian National Union of Students. I wish to thank everyone involved, particularly those who travelled from places as far away as the University of Newcastle and even Canberra to show their support!

Despite spending thousands and thousands of dollars of students' money to fund their ideological, hard left campaign, less than 100 students attended the NUS's Sydney rally, showing that the students of Sydney voted with their feet and opposed Labor's proposed unfair, regressive tax on students. VSU has ensured cheap fees, better services and most importantly, freedom of choice on campus, and has given power to students, not elite student politicians. A return to Compulsory Unionism will hurt ALL students.

I urge all Liberal Students to continue getting involved and to help us in this fight in the coming weeks and months ahead. There shall be many great events for Liberal Students coming up shortly, and strongly suggest you all to attend. I also encourage you to check out the new Australian Liberal Students' Federation website and to become a fan of the ALSF on facebook
