Dear Liberal Students,
Being my first e-bulletin as President, I’d like to say thank you for all those who supported me in my election to this role. It is a great privilege to serve as President of Australia’s premier Liberal Club and continue the proud tradition of promoting the conservative and classical liberal political ideology on campus that we all hold so dear.
Having suffered an election loss at the end of 2007, many Liberals may find themselves wondering what they are fighting for when one of Australia’s most successful centre-right governments can be thrown out of office after eleven years of strong economic management and taking an active role in combating terrorism and promoting democracy around the globe. However, we must not feel disheartened. While we may have fallen victim to the political cycle, we must not stray from our beliefs. Only by sticking to our core values of economic liberalism and social conservatism can we hope to provide an alternative government for the Australian public. Together we must unite to promote these ideals and given the current state of left-wing bias in the education system, there is no place better than university in which to start. I encourage all members of the Club to get involved and take an active role in fighting for our cause.
Finally, I would like to thank my predecessor, Timothy Andrews, for the hard work he has put in and the commitment he has shown in promoting the ideas of free enterprise and traditional values on campus over the last six years he has devoted to the Sydney University Liberal Club. I can only hope to achieve half as much in my time as President, and I think I speak on behalf of the Club in wishing him the very best for his post-university life.
